The winemaker who won't tell you what's in the bottle

Ship26 had another one for the books. We had the honor of hosting Pieter and Aneen Walser for an incredible hour as they took us through the wild journey of an untraditional winemaker.

In his final year of university, Pieter H. Walser was making wine in a friend's garage and selling it in unbranded bottles. No label, no variety, no trace. That was completely illegal.

When authorities caught up with him, the lesson cost him nearly everything. The condition for starting over was simple: come back with a label on your wine. And now he had to think of a name. Driven by sheer heart and persistence, Pieter complied, but a chance encounter brought clarity to his approach forever.

He told us how a woman knocked on his door looking to buy wine, explicitly stating she didn't want Shiraz because she hated it. Pieter went inside, poured her a glass of 100% Shiraz, and watched her fall in love with it. He realized people were judging wine by the label rather than the liquid inside, and this led to the company name BLANKbottle.

Twenty years later, BLANKbottle makes 47 unique wines a year and not a single one lists the grape variety on the front. Where the technical specifications usually sit, Pieter takes you on a journey instead to experience it for yourself.

How a casual conversation with a stranger on a flight out of Cape Town turned into a brain research experiment. A mountain vineyard eaten by birds for six decades that finally began producing after 65 years, the age the rest of us retire. A grape farmer who turns out to be a secret weekend raver. And the list goes on for 47 of them…

The story is the title of the wine, and Pieter hand-draws every single label himself: 47 small pieces of art created by a hand he couldn't artistically use until his forties, when a sudden epilepsy diagnosis rewired something in his brain.

And if that was not enough, Aneen took the room through how she turned around one of their struggling markets. By pairing cutting-edge AI technology with deep personal communication, she scaled their outreach without losing their soul. That high-touch, personal connection remains her secret weapon.

During our Wednesday Talks, Pieter and Aneen took the Ship26 crew on an incredible journey into the world of stories, showing our team how to build a business entirely on your own terms. Through essays printed on bottles, raw voice notes recorded in a car, and short films shot on a selfie stick, BLANKBOTTLE has completely flipped an entire industry on its head: don't judge the label, immerse yourself in the story, meet the person behind the bottle, and only then scan the QR code to find out the cultivar.

None of us had ever seen a product where the story completely replaces the spec sheet. And it works. In a world where story is king, we were all kindly reminded of how this can be used to drive our own journey. Thank you Pieter and Aneen. That was awesome.

What's on next is over on /events.
